What Are We Drinking Now? Villa Sparina

Kerry has two Italian gems from Villa Sparina.

Villa Sparina Gavi & Villa Sparina Barbera

Long before Wine Enthusiast crowned Villa Sparina the 2021 European Winery of the Year, we at Marczyk Fine Wines were already enamored of their charms. The unique bottle shape was inspired by an old bottle discovered in the villa’s historic cellar. While you may be drawn to the bottle’s captivating silhouette, you will no doubt keep coming back to the alluring wines within.

The municipality is Gavi but the grape comprising this dry white wine is Cortese. The nose opens with intense ripe fruit aromas of peach and yellow apple, accompanied by elegant floral hints. On the palate, the bright acidity and rounded texture give way to pronounced flavor concentration. I paired this wine with pesto pasta, but it would also pair well with fish dishes, white meats, and vegetables.

The territory is Montferrat and the grape is Barbera, hence the wine’s classification: Barbera del Monferrato DOC. Classically Italian in style, this red wine boasts pronounced aromas of tart cherry and dark berries and a wonderful balance of acidity and fruit. With soft tannins and a long, refined finish, this wine is a perfect accompaniment to classic Italian fare such as lasagna, meatballs, or braciola.
