What Are We Drinking Now? Elena Walch Schiava

Marshall will guide you into the new season with this Italian red.

Elena Walch Schiava – Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy

Friends, as we enter now what Bertolt Brecht referred to as “the blue month of September,” we find ourselves at a crossroads of summer warmth and autumn chill. Because of this, I want to introduce you to a wine that meets the needs of both seasons: Elena Walch Schiava.

“Now Marshall,” perhaps you might ask me, “what is a schiava?” The term actually refers to a variety of varietals grown in Alto Adige and Trentino, and the wines they produce are light reds that can handle a chill if the day is hot or the warmth of a hand if one finds themselves coasting into the crisp air of autumn.

Elena Walch Schiava welcomes you with aromas of strawberry and rose. With that first taste you will find lovely layers of raspberry, strawberry, and just a touch of something earthen. This wine pairs well with everything from pizza with white sauce, artichokes, and mushrooms, to fresh strawberries and even ice cream, but my favorite thing to pair this with is a warm afternoon and a good book.

Pick yourself up a bottle and enjoy.
