2001 Salexis Napa Valley Merlot
Yes, you read that correctly: It DOES say 2001. This beautiful Napa Valley Merlot was made by John Gibson, who earned his stripes working for Chappellet, Stag’s Leap, and Vin Cliff before starting this project, Salexis. The wine shows its age in the color (a dark garnet) but all of the aromas of raspberry, blackberry, coffee, and chocolate still remain.
A super-big wine at 14%, this should be the anchor to that special Father’s Day meal, especially if there’s a giant hunk of red meat involved (like, say, a tomahawk ribeye from Marczyk Fine Foods right next door). This is the easy way to taste some well-aged vintage wine without having to store it in your basement for two decades.
Be VERY careful with the cork — it has been sitting around for 20 years, after all. Here is a link to an article on how to open and serve vintage wine.
