What Are We Drinking Now? Krasno Orange Wine

Marshall is all about this orange wine from Slovenia. You will be, too.

Krasno Orange Wine

To me, each wine is an adventure. A new bottle can bring me to the hills or shores of new lands as much as a book or painting. I’m always searching for new wines, so when I saw an orange wine from Slovenia, I had to try it. Orange wine gets its name from the hue it takes on either through prolonged skin contact — similar to a rosé — or through aging in clay amphorae; this one gets its color from the former.

Krasno’s orange wine transports me to a porch on a hill under the banner of twilight. In the glass this wine is the color of sunset and smells at once floral and citric. These themes carry through to the tongue with bright acidity and tones of fresh kumquat, yellow peach, dried mango, and an herbaceous hint reminiscent of sage. With a mild minerality, the wine is refreshing and leaves me eager for a second glass.

To see how friendly this wine is to food, I paired it first with brie, which brought out some unexpected quince flavors and practically danced with the richness of the cheese. Later, feeling more audacious, I tried it with a spicy tomato sauce with which it married beautifully.
